Title:
8 Unit Apartment for Nevada Land & Mortgage
Object ID:
2014.1.1376.1-3
Background Information:
This two-story concrete block building designed for Nevada Land & Mortgage was located in Downtown Las Vegas, along south 4th St. Following the modern stucco box aesthetic, the front elevation incorporates a stucco façade with a decorative metal grill and flat roofline. The horizontal massing houses 8 one-bedroom apartments with a reflected floor plan; four apartments on each floor. A symmetrical fenestration with opposing open staircases and an open balcony faces the west elevation. While a decorative geometric pattern highlights the handrails, creating horizontal lines that accentuate the building's horizontal massing.
One extant example of the stucco box apartment is still located at 818 S. 4th St. Though not a Hugh Taylor design, it is representative of the popular style originated in Southern California for its economic feasibility, urban landscape, and response to the post-war housing boom experience throughout the country.
